Flagyl 400mg is a brand name for the antibiotic metronidazole, which is used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria and parasites. It is a prescription-only medication and should not be used for viral infections like the common cold or flu. 

Uses

• Bacterial infections of the blood, brain, bones, joints, lungs, and skin.
• Parasitic infections like amoebiasis (amoebic dysentery) and giardiasis.
• Female reproductive system infections, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and trichomoniasis.
• Dental infections, including gum infections and abscesses.
• Pre- and post-operative prevention of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, especially during abdominal or gynecological surgery.

Important warnings and precautions

• Alcohol: Do not consume alcohol during treatment and for at least 48–72 hours after the final dose. Combining metronidazole with alcohol can cause a severe reaction with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, flushing, and headaches.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use of metronidazole during the first trimester of pregnancy is generally avoided. For women who are breastfeeding, metronidazole passes into breast milk. Some experts advise pumping and discarding milk for 12–48 hours after treatment.
• Medical conditions: Tell your doctor if you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, blood disorders, a nerve disorder, or Crohn's disease.
• Cockayne syndrome: In rare cases, metronidazole has been linked to severe liver failure in patients with this rare genetic disorder. It is contraindicated in these patients.
• Neurological side effects: In rare instances, metronidazole can cause serious side effects involving the nervous system, such as seizures or peripheral neuropathy (numbness or tingling). Stop taking the medication and call your doctor if you experience neurological symptoms.
