Fortum Injection

Fortum injection contains ceftazidime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections. It is administered by a healthcare professional into a muscle or vein. 

Medical uses

How it works

• Ceftazidime works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. This weakens the cell, leading to cell lysis and death. It is bactericidal, meaning it kills the bacteria rather than just stopping its growth.

Administration

• Fortum is typically given as a powder that is reconstituted into a solution before being administered by injection. The dosage and duration of treatment will be determined by a doctor based on the patient's condition, age, and renal function. It is not meant for self-administration unless explicitly instructed by a doctor.  

Side effects and precautions

• Rash or other allergic reactions
• Pain and inflammation at the injection site
• Diarrhea

• Prolonged use can lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, which may require a change in treatment.
• It can potentially reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
• Fortum is not effective against viral infections like the flu.
