Folic Acid Tablets 5mg 28 Tablets

Folic acid 5mg tablets are a high-dose, prescription-only medication used to treat significant folate deficiency or to provide a higher dose to individuals with specific health risks. The 5mg strength is not for general supplementation. The typical over-the-counter dose for standard supplementation is 400 micrograms (0.4mg). 

Primary uses of folic acid 5mg

• Treating folate deficiency anemia: This condition results from a lack of folate, which causes the body to produce abnormally large, immature red blood cells. The 5mg dose is typically taken daily for about four months to correct the deficiency.
• Preventing neural tube defects (NTDs) in high-risk pregnancies: Folic acid is crucial for the healthy development of a baby's brain and spinal cord in early pregnancy. A 5mg dose is prescribed for those with a higher risk of having a baby with an NTD, such as:

                    -A personal or family history of NTDs, like spina bifida.

                    -Diabetes.

                    -Taking certain epilepsy medications.

                    -Sickle cell disease.

• Reducing methotrexate side effects: Methotrexate, a drug used to treat conditions like severe arthritis, Crohn's disease, and psoriasis, can cause folate deficiency. A 5mg folic acid dose is often given weekly (on a different day from the methotrexate) to prevent side effects such as nausea and vomiting. 

Important considerations

• Medical supervision: Because 5mg is a high-strength dose, it should only be used under the guidance of a doctor. High doses can mask the symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency, which can lead to serious and irreversible nerve damage if left untreated.
• Taking the tablets: Folic acid tablets can be taken with or without food and should be swallowed whole with water.
• Potential side effects: Folic acid is generally well-tolerated, but some people may experience mild side effects like nausea, loss of appetite, bloating, or abdominal cramps. Severe allergic reactions are rare but require immediate medical attention.
• Alcohol interaction: Consuming alcohol can interfere with how well folic acid works.
• Dietary sources: A healthy diet includes natural folate from leafy greens, beans, citrus fruits, and enriched foods like fortified cereals and bread. However, this is typically not enough to address the needs that require a high-strength 5mg supplement.
