Hydrea (hydroxyurea) 500mg are capsules used to treat certain types of cancer and manage sickle cell anemia. As a cytotoxic (cell-damaging) medication, it should only be used under a doctor's supervision.
Uses
Hydrea is approved for treating the following conditions:
- Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML): A type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.
- Head and Neck Cancer: Specifically, advanced squamous cell carcinomas (excluding the lip), often used in combination with radiation therapy.
- Sickle Cell Anemia: Used in adults and children to reduce the frequency of painful crises and the need for blood transfusions.
Mechanism of action
Hydrea works by interfering with the synthesis of DNA, which slows or stops the growth of abnormal and cancer cells. In sickle cell disease, it boosts the production of fetal hemoglobin, which helps prevent red blood cells from taking on a sickle shape.
Dosage and administration
- Dosage is highly individualized and determined by a physician based on the patient's weight, the condition being treated, and blood test results.
- Take once daily with a glass of water, usually at the same time each day.
- Swallow the capsules whole. Do not split, chew, or crush them.
- Handle with care. Use gloves when handling the capsules and wash your hands before and after. Clean any spills immediately.
Important precautions
- Bone marrow suppression: Hydrea can cause a significant drop in blood cell counts, increasing the risk of infection and bleeding. Regular blood tests are necessary during treatment.
- Carcinogenic risk: Long-term use may increase the risk of other cancers, particularly skin cancer. You should limit sun exposure and monitor your skin for changes.
- Pregnancy and fertility: Hydrea can cause birth defects and affect fertility in both men and women. Use effective contraception during and for a period after treatment. Do not take Hydrea if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Other medical conditions: Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, leg ulcers, or are taking medications for HIV, as these can affect how Hydrea is used or increase side effects.
