Lantus Solostar is a long-acting insulin glargine injection used to treat diabetes mellitus. It is administered once a day at the same time each day to help control high blood sugar levels in adults and children (ages 6 and above) with type 1 diabetes and adults with type 2 diabetes. Lantus SoloSTAR comes as a disposable, pre-filled pen that contains 300 units of insulin (100 units/mL).
How to use the Lantus SoloStar pen
- Check the pen. Ensure you have the correct pen (gray with a purple injection button) and that the insulin is clear and colorless.
- Attach a new needle. Wipe the rubber seal with an alcohol swab. Screw or push a new, sterile needle onto the pen, keeping it straight to prevent damage to the seal.
- Perform a safety test. Dial 2 units, hold the pen upright, and press the injection button. A drop of insulin should appear at the needle tip. If not, repeat the test. If still no insulin appears after a few attempts, replace the needle.
- Select your dose. Ensure the dose window is at zero, then turn the dosage selector to the required number of units. You can adjust the dose up or down.
- Inject the dose. Pinch a fold of skin and insert the needle straight into the skin. Press the injection button all the way in. Continue holding the button and count slowly to 10 to ensure the full dose is delivered before withdrawing the needle.
- Remove the needle. Put the outer needle cap back on and use it to unscrew the needle. Dispose of the needle in a sharps container.
- Store the pen. Place the pen cap back on. The pen should be stored at room temperature (below 86°F or 30°C) for up to 28 days.
Common side effects
- Injection site reactions: Redness, swelling, pain, or itching at the injection site. Rotating the injection site can help reduce the risk.
- Lipodystrophy: Skin changes like thickening or indentations at the injection site due to fatty tissue changes. This can also be prevented by rotating injection sites.
- Weight gain: A common side effect of all insulins.
- Other effects: Upper respiratory infections, swelling in the hands or feet, and joint pain.
