Gaviscon Infant 30 sachets are an oral powder used to treat gastric reflux and regurgitation in infants. The active ingredients, sodium alginate and magnesium alginate, work by thickening the stomach contents to prevent them from flowing back up the food pipe.

Preparation and Use

Gaviscon Infant is available in sachets containing a powder that is prepared differently depending on whether the infant is breast-fed or bottle-fed. 

For breast-fed infants and weaned children up to age 2:

• A specific amount of sachets per dose may be recommended based on the infant's weight.
• To prepare, the powder is typically mixed with a small amount of cooled, boiled water to form a paste, and then more cooled, boiled water is added and mixed again.
• The prepared dose is usually given partway through or after each feed using a spoon or feeding bottle. 

For bottle-fed infants up to age 2:

• A specific number of sachets may be mixed into a particular volume of feed, depending on the infant's weight.
• The bottle should be shaken well after adding the powder. 

General guidelines for use:

• There is a maximum number of doses that should be given in a 24-hour period.
• The preparation should be administered immediately before use.
• Gaviscon Infant should not be used in combination with other feed-thickening agents or formula milks that already contain a thickening agent. 

Potential side effects

While common side effects are rare, some infants may experience constipation or diarrhea. Other possible side effects include: 

• Abdominal bloating and discomfort
• Flatulence
• In very rare cases, intestinal obstruction has been reported
• Formation of an intragastric mass, which can occur with excessive use. 

If your child experiences any side effects or if symptoms do not improve, discontinue administering Gaviscon Infant and seek medical advice.
